Hot Yoga Review - My Experience of Bikram (Hot) Yoga

Having found a Bikram (hot) Yoga studio in my area, I went along not really sure of what to expect. The first thing that struck me was the smell. A really humid, sweaty smell, but once the class starts, you don't notice it, you probably add to it. A few tips for beginners:

- drink a lot of water prior to your class, i.e: throughout the day before the class
- take a water bottle in with you and drink only when you are told to
- have your last meal 2 - 3 hours prior to the class
- wear as little as possible. Shorts and a crop top or singlet are best. A bikini if you are brave enough.
- try every pose at least once

Now, I'm not one who usually sweats much when they exercise, so it was a great feeling to be sweating bucket loads. The heat allows you to get deeper into each pose, but still only at your own pace. Don't look around and think that you should be doing what others are able to, everyone works to their own ability at Bikram and that's why it is recommended for beginners. The aim of the class is to focus on yourself in the mirror, hence it is considered a 90 minute open-eye meditation.

Each class is done in the same sequence which can put some people off, but I find this a good part of Bikram, because you can gauge how you are doing compared to the last class that you did. Bikram is a very dynamic form of Yoga. Each pose is done twice, holding for between 30-60 seconds. The class begins with Pranayama Breathing, then the standing series, the floor series and finishing with Kapalbhati (Breathing Cleansing Exercise). After the final breathing exercise, you do your final Savasana, and if possible try and stay here for at least 5 minutes. It's a great relaxation and meditation to end with.

Don't think that Bikram is a relaxing form of yoga. It is hard! You work all areas of your body. Every muscle group as well as internal organs and you will increase your heart rate. You'll feel like you've had a really hard workout but without the stress on your heart and joints.
